The Valpo Phoenix, a girls 10 and Under and 12 and Under travel softball program, will be holding tryouts for its 2010 teams on Monday, August 31 and Thursday, September 3 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Bicentennial Park, 175 Burlington Beach Drive, Valparaiso. Attendance on both dates is suggested, but not required. There is no cost to tryout. Divisions are based on participant ages as of December 31, 2009. Girls should bring their own equipment and please be prompt.

Indiana Long Course Age Group State meet. The team was well represented by
Andrew Antonetti, Javier Arriagada, Tim Blue, Grace Cobble, Mark Memsic,

Carl Frey, 9, a student at Immanuel Lutheran School, competed in two events. He placed 27th in the Boys Bantam division 1,500-meter run in 5:41.69 on Tuesday. The next day, Frey ran in the 800 and placed 49th in a time of 2:51.17.
Started in 2004, the Big Boca was a neighborhood run taking place through the streets Boca Lago, Boca Raton, and Boca Teeka, and also ran through 200 East Park. In its second year, the Big Boca expanded and included T-shirts and more than 20 participants. Now, in its 6th year, the Big Boca is proud to support the Food Pantry at Spring Valley Homeless Shelter.
Proceeds of the race have been donated to the Shelter in each of the past 3 years. The money donated helps to provide groceries and supplies for the residents of the shelter, including diapers, canned foods, and even brooms. Last year, we were able to donate over $200 to the cause....

Both the 7th and 8th grade Valparaiso Vikings AAU teams went to Noblesville this weekend and captured the Super Hoops State Tournament title.
The 8th grade team, coached by VHS Varsity Head Coach Chirs Benedict and Greg Doane, was the #1 seed in the tournament, earning them a two round bye. They went on to defeat New Prarie in the semi-finals and then Carmel in the finals. The team is a mix of players from Valparaiso's Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson Middle School squads.
Valparaiso Boys & Girls Club member Matt Emerson, age 12, was selected as the Club's Jr. NBA player of the year, 2009. This award is given annually to the player who best exemplifies the virtues of sportsmanship, team spirit, achievement and responsibility.
Matt was also selected to the Jr. NBA All-Region team and was named as one of the 50 National finalists!
On Saturday April 18th, the Public Education Foundation of Valparaiso hosted it's annual Dollars for Scholars 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Everyone had a great time, and the foundation was able to raise quite a bit of money for a good cause.

After defeating Crown Point in the state semi-finals, the Valpo Cru basketball team feel to Penn 29-24 at Spiece Field House in Fort Wayne. The team is comprised of kids from different elementary schools from around town.
