Cubs Send Samardzija To AAA

ValpoLife Cubs

The Chicago Cubs demoted Jeff Samardzija on Wednesday to Triple A-Iowa. The resulting move brought reliever Chad Fox to the major league squad.

Samardzija has struggled in his major league tenure this season while attempting to make the tough mid-season transition from starter to reliever. Manager Lou Pinella said the former Valpo grad needed to develop a few pitches in order to maximize his effectiveness. Samardzija struggled against the Giants in his final outing in the majors, bringing his major league ERA up to 8.10.

Samardzija began the season in the starting rotation for Iowa, pitching 21 innings with a 1.80 ERA before being called up to the majors. It remains unclear if he...

Running Diary of Game 6: Bulls-Celtics

Game 6: Bulls-Celtics Tonight is Game 6 of the (2) Celtics vs. (7) Bulls Eastern Conference Playoff 1st round series, possibly the best non-Conference Final/NBA Final playoff series ever. Why? Digest these stats. Through five games, there have been: 85 lead changes, 48 ties, 4 games decided by 3 points or less, and it’s the first playoff series ever with three overtime games (thanks to TNT and DVR for those stats). So, I will be providing a running diary for tonight’s festivities. Rose! Rondo! Pierce! Gordon! NBA on TNT!

Pregame: I’m one of those people that’s in the ‘Charles Barkley is a tad overrated as a...

According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune (via MLB Trade Rumors), former VHS and Notre Dame star Jeff Samardzija will be called up to the Chicago Cubs’ major league roster on Thursday.

The news comes as the Cubs’ early season bullpen struggles have forced the Cubs’ hand to reach to the minors to get some help.

It’s Time for You to Follow the NBA Again

Last night reminded me of exactly why I feel the NBA is a better brand of basketball to watch than the NCAA. Bulls-Celtics Game 2 was a barn burner—after half way through the second quarter, no one was up by more than six points the rest of the game. Great defense was played by both teams and two of the leagues streakiest, most clutch shooters were on fire the second half. It is what the NBA Playoffs are all about.

Honestly, I think a lot of NBA fans were turned off by the Read more

Bulls – Celtics Playoff Preview

Call me an eternal optimist, but 2009 appears to be a banner year for Chicago sports. It may be the first year ever that all 5 major sport teams (Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls, Cubs, and White Sox) may actually all make the playoffs. The Bears have Jay Cutler, the easiest schedule in the upcoming season, and the most prime-time night games. The Blackhawks… well, I would break down the Blackhawks more for you, but I know as much about hockey as my dog does about astrophysics. Cubs and White Sox were both picked to win their respective divisions by virtue of the Vegas odds. And the Bulls clinched a playoff spot...

Samardzija to Start Season in the Minors

Cubs’ Pitcher Still Has Options

VHS grad Jeff Samardzija will start next season pitching for the AAA Iowa Cubs.

The move is not so much a result of poor play on Samardzija’s part, but rather the organization’s pitching situation. The Cubs gave the final two roster spots to Angel Guzman, who has had experienced elbow and shoulder injuries in the past, and David Patton, the Cubs’ selection in the Rule 5 Draft.

"It was a long shot when [Patton] got there, and the kid deserves all the credit in the world for pitching himself into it," Cubs’ GM Jim Hendry said.

Jay Cutler Can Leap Tall Buildings with a Single Bound, Cure Rare Diseases, and Always Brushes After Big Meals

Chicago-Bears-Training-Camp-noise-1In case you have been living under a rock the past 24 hours, allow me to take pleasure in informing you that the Chicago Bears traded for the Denver Broncos' young stellar quarterback, Jay Cutler. Let me repeat: the Bears finally have a quarterback.

The Fine Print May Make Samardzija Start the Season in the Minors

For the Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija, game performance may not be the only deciding factor in whether or not he starts the season for the major league club in 2009. It may be determined by someone else’s play in past seasons.

You see, the Major League Baseball Player’s Union has negotiated several extra perks for their constituents through the years. In fact, the baseball player’s union has been said to be one of the most powerful unions in the world.

Time Will Tell if Samardzija Will Make Opening Day Roster

Former Valpo Standout May or May Not Make Major League Squad

As spring training draws to a close, Opening Day draws nearer each day. All the while, Chicago Cubs’ general manager Jim Hendry, along with manager Lou Pinella must trim down the clubs spring training roster to 25 individuals who will ultimately make the major league roster.

At this point, it is unclear whether Jeff Samardzija will be playing for the Chicago Cubs or the Iowa Cubs (AAA).

Robbie Hummel Leads Purdue into the Sweet Sixteen

VHS Grad's Purdue Team to Play #1 Seed in NCAA Tournament

The University of Connecticut has been a powerhouse in the past two decades in the world of college basketball. On Thursday, the (#5) Purdue Boilermakers will try to pull the upset over the Huskies.

Purdue, led by stellar sophomore trio of E'Twuan Moore, JaJuan Johnson, and Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year Robbie Hummel, will try and take down the UCONN Huskies led by AJ Price and Hasheem Thabeet, two players who will likely be lottery picks in June's NBA draft.
