Six shutout innings from Trevor Lubking and a season-high 10 runs led the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a 10-1 victory over the Sioux City Explorers and their first series win of the year on Thursday night at U.S. Steel Yard. Every starter reached base safely at least one time for the ‘Cats and eight of the nine reached base twice or more.

It’s been a long season of intense training and preparation for the region’s high school softball teams. Athletes from all around the area have put in countless hours of practice and drills, hoping to have their best performances when they took to the field at the IHSAA Sectional Championships.
The Chesterton Trojans defeated the Portage Indians 14 - 2 at Chesterton High School on Wednesday evening. Fans of both teams gathered around the softball field. Some stood in the areas around the edge of the field, made muddy from the previous day’s rain. While the area surrounding the field was mucky, the softball diamond was dry and ready for some postseason action.
After shutting out Sioux City, 7-0, in the home opener on Tuesday night at U.S. Steel Yard, the Explorers turned the tables on the RailCats with a 2-0 shutout over Gary on Wednesday. Gary’s (2-3) best chance of scoring came in the bottom of the first when the ‘Cats had the bases loaded with one out but recorded back-to-back flyouts to end the inning.
Valparaiso University has announced plans for the launch of an esports program that is set to begin in the fall of 2019. The University will offer competitive esports through the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE).

Competitors from the 13 high schools represented at the event cooed and laughed, welcoming the good omen as they moved through their warm-up routines. Fighting against the strong winds and dark clouds that chilled the air, they renewed their focus with big smiles on their faces.
The 35th Annual IHSAA State Softball Tournament kicked off Monday night at Chesterton High School with Valpo competing against Chesterton in the opening round. The Trojans came out on top of the Vikings with a score of 11-1 through 5 innings. The Vikings could not keep up with the Trojans hits.
