LIVESTRONG at the Valparaiso YMCA

One of the many things that cancer survivors struggle with is the return to physical activity after treatment. After an ongoing dialogue between cancer survivors about this, LIVESTRONG connected with the YMCA of the USA to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, an intensive 12-week physical-activity-based program designed with survivors specifically in mind.

The YMCA knows that lasting personal and positive social change cannot be done alone. This is why strengthening the community through collaboration plays a significant role in every decision and program the Y offers.

Earlier in March, the Valparaiso Family YMCA held their annual Cycle Challenge, titled “Peddle with a Purpose.” The highly-anticipated event brought community and Y members together to bike for a cause. Cyclers had the option to cycle for 30 minutes or more for a three-hour morning spurt. The event celebrated the inspirational and fearless LIVESTRONG cancer survivors. Money raised from the Cycle Challenge supported Valparaiso Family YMCA’s Annual Campaign that provides program support to cancer survivors, children, neighbors, and the community. This year the challenge raised $5,036!

For the 12-week LIVESTRONG program at the Y, certified fitness instructors cater to individual cancer survivorship needs, focusing on post-rehabilitation exercise and supportive cancer care. The best part is that there is little to no cost to participate. Additionally, for the duration of the LIVESTRONG program, survivor family members are able to receive a free membership at the YMCA.

"We are starting more LIVESTRONG groups here. One will be in mid April, and the other in May," Brittany Tripp, Valparaiso Family YMCA Wellness Director said. "Please encourage anyone you know who has ever had cancer, any type of cancer, that this is available to them. We would love to have them."

For cancer survivors, increased activity enhances the chance of preserving strength and reducing the recurrence of cancer. LIVESTRONG has served 62,446 people out of 735 communities nationally for the program. The Valparaiso Family YMCA encourages cancer survivors to take full advantage of the opportunity for customized fitness and wellness.

The LIVESTRONG and other programs supported by the Valparaiso Family YMCA Annual Campaign are made possible by sponsors and contributors. Sponsors for the 2019 Cycle Challenge were: Urschel Laboratories (Presenting), St. Teresa Catholic Student Center (Bronze), incremental (Bronze), and Leo’s Mobile Bicycle Service (Friend of the Y).
