During pregnancy, a woman can expect to feel a full range of emotions. From the excitement of the baby’s first movements to the exhaustion of the last weeks of pregnancy, women are in for a rollercoaster of experiences. Many women agree that one of the most difficult parts of pregnancy is dealing with feeling uncomfortable as the body expands to accommodate a growing baby. For women of the Region, relief may be right around the corner. Dr. Ryan Porterfield of Porterfield Family Chiropractic has received certification in the Webster Technique, a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that can make pregnancy and delivery a lot more comfortable.
“The Webster Technique is all about prenatal, postnatal, and infant care,” Dr. Porterfield said. “It’s about helping the mom get through the pregnancy comfortably. If everything is more aligned and working as it should, those 20-, 30-, or 40-hour labors are reduced significantly to the average 10- or 12-hours labors.”
The technique aims to reduce interference to the nervous system and balance maternal pelvic muscles and ligaments. By making specific adjustments, the tension that a mother holds in her pelvic muscles and ligaments can be significantly reduced, increasing comfort during pregnancy and delivery.
“We’re focusing on hip and pelvic alignment,” Dr. Porterfield said. “There’s a certain way to adjust the body properly to help to put everything where it needs to be. This technique makes pregnancy, especially towards the end during the high 20 and 30 weeks of gestation, more bearable. It really helps to reduce a lot of the back pain and mobility issues that ladies typically see during pregnancy.”
Dr. Porterfield became interested in pursing his certification after supporting his wife through her first pregnancy. As Dr. Porterfield and his wife are now expecting their second child, it became the perfect time to bring this technique to the Region.
“As the uterus grows and starts to come up out the abdomen, that increases weight in front of the body,” Dr. Porterfield said. “The body naturally leans forward, and gravity pulls you down, and your body fights against it and pulls backwards. It creates a pinch point at the lower back. Chiropractic is helping to resettle these bones to take pressure off these nerves, so it is not as strenuous on the woman’s lower back and tailbone area. Chiropractic, in general, is going to help take pressure off the body and off the spine to allow the body to move and function more effectively.”
Dr. Porterfield has personally witnessed the amazing benefits chiropractic care has had on pregnancy, so he is excited to add the Webster Technique as an additional tool to assist women throughout their pregnancies.
“I had a patient who was pregnant with her fifth child,” Dr. Porterfield said. “With her first four pregnancies, she did not pursue chiropractic care. With her fifth child, labor and delivery was so much faster at just six or seven hours, when her four other children were 18 to 24 hours each time. She told me that she did not experience any back pain until a week or two before delivery. In her previous pregnancies, she experienced back pain throughout her third trimester. The difference between a week or two of being uncomfortable and three months of being uncomfortable is huge.”
Dr. Porterfield will be one of just a handful of doctors in the area with this certification.
“Pregnancy should be an enjoyable time for the most part. It should be a fun and happy time, and that’s where chiropractic care can come in,” Dr. Porterfield said. “We can make everything move and function better so you can enjoy your pregnancy. It’s a very special time.”
