Active in NWI: Fit on a Budget

This time of year brings out the best in people. The giving nature comes out and people buy gifts, throw parties, and support charities. There isn’t always time or money left over to do the rest of the things that you want. This includes staying active.

“Exercising is expensive. I don’t have the money for a gym membership or fancy shoes.”

I have heard this excuse before. That is simply not true. There are plenty of places that will work with you if you’re on a budget. Check with your local YMCA or other fitness facility to see what they offer.

“I don’t like going to the gym.”

Then stay home. There are plenty of things that can be done around the house that keep you active and are completely free.

  • Household chores burn calories
  • You can run in place or do planks during the ads on Hulu or Netflix
  • Watch American Horror Story from a new perspective as you walk on the treadmill
  • Shovel the driveway
  • Chase the kids around outside
  • Play with your dog

You can also leave your dwellings. If you live close enough to town, you can ride your bike to the store and get your holiday gifts (have a way to transport them home), you can walk or run too. If you have to drive, park far away and walk into the store. Do like the mall walkers do and take laps around the store.

“Eating healthy is expensive.”

Eating healthy is probably the hardest thing to do during the holidays. Fresh produce isn’t in season, and mom made her famous cookies. Grandpa made his infamous egg nog. Hot cocoa, peppermint and gingerbread everything are everywhere. It’s almost not worth eating healthy because you’ll miss out on all the good stuff. BUT instead of giving it all up, just lessen the load. Instead of getting a large mochablahblahblah, get a small. Instead of using whole milk for that hot cocoa, try skim or almond milk (I’ve tried it and it’s good). And instead of seven of mom’s cookies, have one or two. You’ll save money and grandpa won’t be offended that you didn’t try his egg nog.

“But the equipment is expensive.”

Not if you get it second hand. Somewhere out there is a treadmill or medicine ball that is being neglected. Head to EBay or Craigslist to see if there are is anything for sale. And ask around. Maybe a friend got a new set of free weights and has no room for the old set.
