Senior Banquet

The 2019 Chesterton High School senior banquet was held at the Spa Banquet Center in Porter, Ind. on May 23rd. The banquet included dinner, awards, and other fun activities. This event was hosted by social studies teacher, Dana Huwig, and math teacher, Liz Countroubis, who are also the class sponsors. The one last hoorah for the Class of 2019 included great memories and a time to say their almost final goodbyes as classmates begin to enter the real world and head off to college, serve in the military, or go right into the workforce.

The banquet awarded over thirty superlatives alongside a dance and the chance to socialize. Seniors anticipated the banquet before the event, hoping it wouldn’t be too emotional.

Kristine Prater has worked at Boone Grove for nine years. During her time here she has influenced many students in an academic and personal matter. As Spanish teacher at BGHS, she has touched many lives.

“Mrs. Prater is just a blast to be around. She’s funny but she’s also really caring and it’s something us students definitely appreciate,” junior Spanish ll student Delaney Starcevich said.

At BGHS, Prater is the Key Club and Spanish Club sponsor. Students involved in Key Club find having her as a sponsor rewarding because she pushes them to work for their community and see the joy in it. But if you ask Prater, the most rewarding part of her job is seeing her students succeed in and outside of the classroom.

Summer Reading

Every year, the Porter County Public Library System puts on the summer reading program for kids and adults. Summer Reading is a lot more than just reading though, the library incentivizes patrons to engage in summer reading by offering prizes, drawings, and other related events and programs.

“Summer reading has a long tradition. The key for us is to help stop the ‘summer slide’ from happening. Making sure kids are reading literally anything to help protect the gains they were making in the school year,” Porter County Public Library System Director, Jesse Butz said. “Stats show that kids who don’t read can drop a grade level or two during the summer.”

They’ve had a strong turnout this year of people signed up for the summer reading program.
