Duo Sequenza performs in celebration of National Chamber Music Month

Duo Sequenza will perform their all-new concert, “We’ve Got Rhythm!” at the Memorial Opera House, 104 Indiana Avenue, Valparaiso, Indiana, on Wednesday, May 8 at 7:30 pm in celebration of National Chamber Music Month, a nationwide initiative to draw attention to small ensemble performance. This will be the duo’s 5th Annual National Chamber Music Concert featuring a cornucopia of music written for flute and classical guitar by American composers. A Meet and Greet at the Cash Bar begins at 7:00 pm.

The May 8 concert, “We’ve Got Rhythm!” features tonal and highly agreeable works by Schocker, Maggio, Hand, Holliday, Caliendo, Daugherty, and Chamberlain will get your feet tapping and prove that if you think you DON’T LIKE classical music, you haven’t heard Duo Sequenza!

The internationally acclaimed Duo Sequenza enjoys enthusiastic ovations from audiences and praise from composers and critics. Debra Silvert, hailed as “a gem of a flutist,” and Paul Bowman, “among the best guitarists in the world,” have premiered American new music throughout the U.S., Asia, and Europe. Active in commissioning new works, and on the Artist Roster of PARMA Recordings, their album of world premiere recordings releaseed on the Navona Records label this month and has received glowing advance acclaim. As a concert artist chamber ensemble, their mission is the strategic development of new audiences for today’s classical music by promoting the work of living composers.

Duo Sequenza’s performance is one of hundreds taking place across the country this May as part of this eighth annual series. Last year, participants in all fifty states took part in events showcasing ensemble music of all styles, including classical, jazz, world, and early music, as well as contemporary and experimental works informed by emerging technologies and innovative performance techniques.

Chamber Music America, the national network of ensemble music professionals and the organization behind National Chamber Music Month, has encouraged ensembles and presenters, both well-known and emerging, to utilize this month to increase public awareness of chamber music performance and to attract new audiences within their own communities. The Valparaiso-based duo, chamber ensemble-in-residence at the Memorial Opera House, recently founded Sequenza Chamber Music, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit cultural arts organization whose mission is to support the duo’s work in presenting contemporary classical music for today’s diverse audiences.

Chamber Music America defines chamber music as works for small ensembles of 2–10 members, playing one to a part and generally performing without a conductor. “Chamber music is a vibrant and diverse field,” said Margaret M. Lioi, CEO of Chamber Music America. “It includes contemporary music, jazz, world music, Western classical, and styles that draw from all of these. National Chamber Music Month will showcase the richness of chamber music through performances in urban and rural areas across the country, and we are thrilled that so many presenters and ensembles are participating.”

This National Chamber Music Month Concert is FREE to all active U.S. military and veterans. Come enjoy Real Music, by Real Artists, for Real People at the historic Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso!
