    The city of Valparaiso now has one more way to keep the community informed: Twitter. “We’re always willing to try new ways to keep the community informed and Twitter is a new opportunity,” said Mayor Jon Costas. Twitter is a free social messaging utility that allows users to send and receive text or e-mail messages (up to 140 characters) within a network of people or organizations that they choose themselves.

    “We’ve seen figures that say that many people will be receive a majority of their news through networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook in the near future,” said Craig Phillips, Valpo’s City Planner. “People who ‘follow’ the city on Twitter can receive immediate real-time news,” he said.     1st Grader Receives Community Service Award from Police Chief


    Today, May 13, 2009, Chief of Police Michael Brickner and numerous other officers visited Bailey Elementary School in Chesterton to present a Community Service Award to a first grader.

    On April 21st of this year, Rosie Portelli was home alone with her mother when she learned her mother needed immediate medical treatment. Rosie’s mother had passed out and Rosie, who has a hearing impairment, dialed 911 to get help for her mother. Valparaiso Police Officers were dispatched to the scene and were uncertain of the problem due to the communication difficulties.     Tiger Cub Pack 927 learned about what's been on everyone's mind lately, "what's up with the weather?" They identified symbols the meteorologist often uses and drew them on a weather map. We talked about weather conditions, weather terminology and even created a high and low front by doing a simple experiment. First, a plastic bottle was filled with a few inches of warm water, a lit match was placed inside, then the bottle was immediately capped.

    VHS Academic Superbowl Team Named Top 10


    Congratulations to the Valparaiso High School Academic Superbowl team being named as one of the “Top 10 Overall” scores at last week’s competition.

    Taylor Granat Elected Key Club Govenor


    Taylor Granat, of Valparaiso High School, has been elected governor of the Indiana District of Key Club International, a Kiwanis International Service Leadership Program for high school students, for the 2009 – 2010 academic year.

    As governor, Taylor will preside over board meetings, train and work with her lieutenant governors to build membership, enhance the member experience and represent Key Club International. She will also appoint a convention committee of lieutenant governors to be responsible for the planning of the 2010 annual district convention.

    Parkview’s Stacy Schmidt Named VCS’ New Director of Elementary Education


    Valparaiso Community Schools has named Stacy Schmidt the director of Elementary Education. Schmidt, the principal of Parkview Elementary, is excited to be coming to the new position.

    “I have been thrilled to serve the students and parents in the Valparaiso Community School Corporation for the past ten years,” she said. “I loved the years I spent teaching in the district. I love working as an administrator in the district. I am now excited to begin a new adventure serving the families and staff of the entire district.”
