United Way of Porter County is offering everyone the opportunity to be a face and a voice in Porter County. United Way of Porter County’s Goodwill Ambassadors Program is a professional development program that educates and connects the community. Goodwill Ambassadors help spread the word about how individual donors, companies and the United Way Partner Network are positively impacting community need in Northwest Indiana.
Lakeshore Paws, a local non-profit that rescues dogs and finds them new homes, hosted their annual Pup Crawl fundraiser event at Central Park in Valparaiso on Saturday evening. The event serves as a fundraiser and a way to spread awareness of the organization.
Wine and beer enthusiasts enjoyed sunny weather, delicious wines and brews, and zoo animal exhibits at the 2019 Brew at the Zoo fundraiser at Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City, Ind. Attendees also enjoyed live music from the band HiFi2WiFi.
Color filled the streets of Gary Saturday morning as walkers laced up their tennis shoes and took to the roads for the annual Walk for Sojourner Truth House (STH). This year marked the 20th anniversary of the event, and was deemed a “color walk” in celebration of this noteworthy commemoration.
On Friday, hundreds gathered at Harley-Davidson of Valparaiso as classic hot rods and modern muscle cars filled the parking lots and lined the streets.

The walk/run starts and ends at The Wolf Lake Aquatic Play Center on Saturday, July 20, 2019. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m. Early registration is $20 on or before July 19, race day $25. A free children’s race begins at 8:15 a.m. and children 8 and under will receive a complimentary t-shirt. Awards will be presented to the top three female and male overall; and first places male and female finisher in each age division. Age divisions are: 8 and under; 9-11; 12-14; 15-18; 19-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70 and over. When John Seibert, Director of Valpo Parks, received the call that a donation had been made to the department’s Leaders Giving Back campaign, he was happy to hear that it was in honor of former little-league coach Charles “Biff” Geiss. The donation came from former Valpo little-leaguer Dave Lebryk, who now happens to be the Fiscal Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. From the donation was born the Youth Sports Fund and the Biff Geiss Rookie Baseball League. Lebryk made a special visit from the East Coast to celebrate the league’s opening day Wednesday.

Last night, Post 94 defeated East Chicago Post 369 8-1 in an 8-inning game (we were scheduled for 9, but it got too dark). Post 94 pitched seven different pitchers (Zack Zborowski, Ryan Troxel, Bryce Hayman, Nick Caputo, Connor Krantz, Riley Shreve and Mike Jovanovic) who combined for 18 strikeouts while only giving up 5 hits in 8 innings. Leading hitters were Bryce Hayman (3 runs, 2 hits), Jeremy Krantz (1 run, 3 hits, 1 RBI), Nick Caputo (1 run, 2 hits including a double, and 2 RBIs), Mike Jovanovic (1 run, 2 hits including a triple, and 1 RBI), Connor Krantz (1 run and 1 hit), Zack Zborowski (1 run, 1 hit -- a home run, and 1 RBI) and Gabriel Arteaga (1 hit and 1 RBI).
