With less than a month before opening, Journey Senior Living in Valparaiso opened its doors to seniors in the community for a nice afternoon of painting for their Canvas Painting Party. The sun was shining brightly across the snow outside the windowed walls where the attendees gathered to paint today.
“We’re doing a free painting event for seniors in the area,” said Melissa Green, Executive Director for Journey Senior Living in Valparaiso. “This is to get them to come out to our facility and get familiar with who we are. Today is a Valentine’s theme. It’s a fun little gathering for folks in the community.”
With so much snow on the ground lately, this was Journey’s way of getting everyone out of their house to socialize and meet new people, all while getting to know the new facility in Valparaiso and having fun with some acrylics.
Teaching today’s canvas party was Melinda Velasco, who not only runs Paint with Me, but is part of the Social Artworking Network.
“I just like to do these types of events. I do them at people’s homes. For me its meeting new people. I love to bring out people’s artistic abilities,” explained Velasco, who fell in love with painting after she attended a similar art and canvas event.
With smiles all around, and snacks to munch on when waiting for the paint to dry, it was clear that everyone was having a good time.
“I’m not a good painter, but I like to have fun. That’s what it’s all about. I have friends who are good painters and they encouraged me to come,” said attendee Mary Devries.
Journey is set to open in a month, and the facility that was built right next to Porter Hospital is state-of-the-art. Specializing in Assisted living, Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care, Respite Care, and Adult Day Care, Journey has top quality care with experienced and caring professionals on staff.
Each apartment is set up to be as much like home for residents as possible, with chef prepared meals, beauty salons, housekeeping, library, enrichment rooms, and outdoor lounge areas when there isn’t a foot of snow on the ground.
