A Pacific white-sided dolphin at Shedd is expecting

We are delighted to announce that Piquet, one of the Pacific white-sided dolphins at Shedd Aquarium, is pregnant and due to deliver this fall. The 31-year-old dolphin is an experienced mother, having previously given birth to two healthy calves at Shedd – Sagu, born in 2012, and Makoa, born in 2015.

Our veterinary and animal care teams report that Piquet and her developing calf are progressing exactly as they should. They will provide her with any prenatal attention she may require in addition to the excellent care that is standard for all Shedd’s animals.

St. John the Evangelist students deliver on service project by assisting Franciscan Health Prenatal Assistance Programs

A group of seventh-grade girls from St. John the Evangelist School in St. John enjoyed a recent shopping spree. But it wasn’t for themselves. The girls were buying diapers and other baby supplies for families in need.

As part of the school’s Marian Girls Program, seventh- and eighth-grade girls participate in a two-year program that features a service project. This year, the Marian Girls seventh-graders chose to have a fundraiser to benefit the Franciscan Health Prenatal Assistance Programs in Crown Point and Hammond.

Their efforts raised $1,114 and were used to purchase several boxes of diapers and wipes, baby clothing, blankets and crib sheets, toiletries, stuffed animals, gift cards and more. rot1The Institute for Leadership and Service at Valparaiso University has selected 22 Valpo students and recent alumni for Calling and Purpose in Society (CAPS) Fellowships during summer 2019. Recipients are selected from a competitive pool of applicants and will complete internships with organizations dedicated to service and leadership for eight to 10 weeks during the summer.
