Nicole Van Duyn is a Region sprout whose strong roots started growing in her hometown of Crown Point. Her extensive professional background fuels her passion to help local businesses grow and thrive.
Before she joined the General Insurance Services (GIS) team, Van Duyn worked in the hospitality industry, non-profit sector and banking industry. A friend and former co-worker, Alison Williams approached her with an opportunity with the insurance company.
“She explained how happy she was at her new job and how great the company was,” Van Duyn said. “I asked her what her position entailed and as she was telling me about the job, her passion really started to show.”
Listening to her friend talk about her passion for her new career reminded Van Duyn of her own drive to help others.
“As I moved through my career, I started to realize that what I enjoyed most was working closely with business and helping them grow while ensuring they had what they needed to be successful.” Van Duyn said. “It wasn’t until I had that conversation with Alison that I realized a career in the insurance industry could fulfill that passion, and it absolutely does.”
One of the many things she loves about GIS is their commitment to giving back to the community.
“Not only does GIS truly support us in our careers and set us up for success, they are also very community focused and encourage us to get involved and volunteer whenever we can.”
Van Duyn earned a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Purdue University Northwest (PNW). She serves on PNW’s Alumni Board, working with students and other alumni. Nicole even had the opportunity to volunteer at Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build in 2018 with Alumni and two of her former professors from the Hospitality Program.
“I’m very involved with alumni activity,” she said. “I love being able to support the college that gave so much to me and hopefully help mentor students and set them on the right track for life after graduation.”
Van Duyn’s work doesn’t stop there. She’s also involved with Full Circle Young Professionals, Hobart Kiwanis, and the Merrillville Rotary Club.
“Clothing Our Children is the signature event of Merrillville Rotary club. We raise money for children throughout Lake County and issue vouchers for them in the fall and they are able to pick out new clothes for the winter.” Van Duyn said. “I love seeing how passionate the Rotary Club is when it comes to this event and how the whole community and the schools come together. It’s amazing to see the outpouring of support from the community to help kids in need.”
When she’s not with clients or volunteering, Van Duyn enjoys participating in 5k races, spoiling her dog Finn with her husband, and going to Disney World.
“My husband and I are big Disney people. We plan trips whenever we can,” she said. “There is something so special about the feeling you get when you walk into the Magic Kingdom and see Cinderella Castle, even as an adult.”
